Dongdaemun Design Plaza (동대문 디자인) or DDP has an impressive structure of modern architecture. Designed by architect Zaha Hadid, in 2014. The design on the outside is stunning and gorgeous while the inside has stunning designs that continue with the elaborate hallways and luxurious lighting.
They chose DDP as one of the “52 Best Places to Visit in 2015” by the New York Times. It was also the most tagged site on Instagram in 2015 in Korea. DDP is also a great venue for design-related exhibitions, performances, events, and gatherings. Because of the unique design, it has become the newest and most famous landmark in the Korean design industry and A. A must see place for every fan of modern architecture and design!

Dongdaemun History and Culture Park (동대문) contains traditional and modern cultural facilities all coming together in harmony and this was also the newest park in Seoul. During the Joseon Dynasty, it was used as a military training ground and major historical remains can be found at the place including the original part of the city walls of Seoul. The park also includes a water gate built in the Joseon Dynasty named legansomon.
This place was before that an open space and they transformed it into a beautiful LED rose garden showcasing the unique, cool and modern technology of LED lights. There are approximately 25,550 LED roses lit in the dark which is the best attraction in Seoul at night, especially for couples.
Things to do near Dongdaemun Design Plaza
This place also consists of different halls like art museum and design lab which houses different types of art and cultural exhibitions. In 2017, I had the chance to see a Pixar exhibit where I saw life-size characters like Lightyear BUZZ, Woody of Toy Story, and cute monsters from Monster University. This year they also held a Disney Mickey Mouse exhibit.
Visit Dongdaemun History Museum
The museum was built in 2009 and reopened in 2020 in order to preserve relics from the Dongdaemun Design Plaza building. Admission is free and open from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm and the museum is also closed during Mondays and New Years Eve.
Dongdaemun Design Plaza is surrounded by shopping malls, markets and boutiques. That is why it is famous as one of the shopping areas in Seoul. There are seven things you should shop in Dongdaemun which includes Doota Mall where you can find more modern styles and high quality but expensive items. If you are looking for a shopping mall that has a full range of top brands, you can visit Lotte Fittin via DDP. If you are looking for stylish and cheaper products, you can find them at hello apM and Migliore. Wholesale shoppers often visit apM Place and U: American Malls where you can see a lot of shopping bags at every kiosk.
Apart from the malls, SM Town Store and Kakao Friends are the most visited stores with Kpop and cute merchandise at DDP.
Try the Seoul City Tour Bus
Another way to experience Seoul through Dongdaemun is the Seoul City Tour Bus. The city tour bus provides a shuttle tour where you can see the most famous attractions of the city.
There are different tour courses you can choose including the traditional culture course. A 22-stop path will take you to Seoul’s historic palaces. The course also includes top destinations such as Namsan Tower, Myeongdong, Namdaemun, Itaewon and the National Museum of Korea. Other courses are Hangang / Jamsil Course and Night view course costs 15,000-18,000 won for adults and 9,000-12,000 won for children.

Whenever I visit DDP, I always see a lot of supermodels and tourists who love to take pictures here. This year, DDP also launched a filming service called Panorama Seoul.
